The hormone ghrelin, which can make you crave high fat and high calorie foods is increased by 28% when you sleep less than 8 hours a night.  As well the hormone cortisol, which can raise your appetite and help fat to stick to your belly is raised when you are sleep deprived. The results of all of these hormonal changes is weight gain.  Getting 8 hours of sleep a night is a must when you are trying to lose weight, and a great way to help you lose weight faster than just with diet and exercise alone.
