When you exercise, the muscles contract and the resistance is lifted against gravity.  The process of your msucles contracting is called a positive movement and as your muscles un-contract and the weight is lowered, this is referred to as a negative movement.  You can use this technique to your advantage to shock the muscles and get more results faster.

Negative training puts greater stress on the tendons and structural tissues rather than on the muscles themselves.   By increasing the size and strength of the supportive tissues around the muscles, you end up building a stronger and larger foundation for which the muscles rely on.  This then allows for more potential muscle mass and strength to develop over time.

To work your negatives, always lower the weight slowly and in control.  For a more aggressive approach, choose a heavier weight than usual for a particular exercise and cheat to get the weight up.  Then, slowly lower the heavy weight very slowly in order to really work all of the tendons and connective tissues in the surrounding areas.
